Gary Holden President and CEO, ENMAX Corporation

Gary Holden became President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ENMAX Corporation (ENMAX) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of each of ENMAX’s subsidiary corporations in May 2005. He serves as a director on each of the ENMAX Boards, the Canadian Electricity Association, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc.

Prior to joining ENMAX, Gary held several key positions with other organizations. Most recently he was President and Chief Operating Officer, AltaGas Income Trust. Prior to his role at AltaGas he was Chairman and CEO of EnSource Energy Services. Gary started his career in Calgary where he held a variety of positions with TransAlta Corporation. He was Executive Vice-President, Generation, and CEO of TransAlta New Zealand Limited, where he was responsible for the Australia and New Zealand business activities for TransAlta.

In 1997, Gary was selected as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40. He was also runner-up as CEO of the Year in 1998 in New Zealand.



Robert Kennedy Jr. Chairman, Waterkeeper Alliance and Chief Prosecuting Attorney, Riverkeeper

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s reputation as a resolute defender of the environment stems from a litany of successful legal actions. Mr. Kennedy was named one of Time magazine's “Heroes for the Planet” for his success helping Riverkeeper lead the fight to restore the Hudson River. The group's achievement helped spawn more than 130 Waterkeeper organizations across the globe. Robert serves as Chief Prosecuting Attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and President of Waterkeeper Alliance. He is also a Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney at Pace University School of Law’s Environmental Litigation Clinic and is co-host of Ring of Fire on Air America Radio.

Among Robert's published books are the New York Times’ bestseller Crimes Against Nature (2004) and The Riverkeepers (1997). His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, The Nation, Outside Magazine, The Village Voice, and many other publications.Robert Kennedy Jr. is a graduate of Harvard University. He studied at the London School of Economics and received his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School. Following graduation he attended Pace University School of Law, where he was awarded a Masters Degree in Environmental Law.


Michael Cleland
President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association

Before joining CGA Michael Cleland was Senior Vice President Government Affairs for the Canadian Electricity Association. Prior to joining CEA in 2000 he was Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Energy Sector in the Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), formerly Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) and before that, Director General of the Energy Policy Branch.

Before joining the federal government in 1987, Mr. Cleland worked in Nova Scotia where, he was a principal in the firm of Cleland, Dunsmuir Consulting Ltd., lecturer in business/government relations at the school of Public Administration at Dalhousie University and academic editor of Plan Canada, the journal of the Canadian Institute of Planners. From 1982 to 1985, he was Associate Director of the Centre for Development Projects at Dalhousie University where he was responsible for various management training projects in Zimbabwe and the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Director of Horizons, Corporate Responsibility, Nike Inc.

Sarah has an extensive background in consumer research and advertising prior to joining Nike where she has spent the last 15 years in a variety of roles. Originally recruited in 1993 to establish a consumer insights department in Nike’s European headquarters she moved into an environmental role and in 1995 relocated to World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon as Global Director of the Environmental Action Team. From 1995 to 2000 she led the company’s early efforts to integrate sustainability into the business, from operations through to product design and manufacturing.

In June 2000 Sarah was appointed Director of Sustainable Development. In this role she focused primarily on stakeholder engagement, corporate responsibility reporting and the identification of emerging issues.

In 2005 Sarah took on the newly created role of Director of Horizons within the Corporate Responsibility team. The Horizons function has responsibility for  “looking long” and identifying future trends, opportunities and issues at the intersection of business and sustainability. For the past 10 years she has lead Nike’s efforts around climate change and is also now focused on developing Nike’s climate change advocacy strategy.

Sarah served on the Pacific Northwest regional council of the President’s Council for Sustainable Development from 1995 to1997, the board of The Natural Step U.S from 1997 to 2004 and the State of Oregon Governor’s Climate Change Integration Group from 2007-2008. Currently she serves on the Advisory Boards of Sustainable Northwest and the Oregon Natural Step network and is a core faculty member of the Prince of Wales and University of Cambridge Business and Environment Programme.

Peter Tertzakian


Peter Tertzakian Author, A Thousand Barrels a Second

Best selling author of A Thousand Barrels a Second, published by McGraw-Hill, Peter Tertzakian is the Chief Energy Economist of ARC Financial Corporation, one of the world's leading energy investment firms.

Peter's background in geophysics, economics and finance, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit, helped him rise from the trenches of hands-on oil exploration fieldwork to become an internationally recognized, top-ranked expert in energy matters.

Often seen and heard through media outlets around the world, Peter's been a featured guest on many high-profile radio and television shows including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In print and electronic media, Peter has been featured in major publications around the world and contributes editorials to widely read periodicals.

Peter has an undergraduate degree in Geophysics from the University of Alberta, and a graduate degree in Econometrics from the University of Southampton, U.K. He also holds a Master of Science in Management of Technology from the Sloan School of Management at MIT.


Daniel Lerch
Author, Post Carbon Cities: Planning for Energy and Climate Uncertainty

Daniel Lerch is the author of Post Carbon Cities: Planning for Energy and Climate Uncertainty, the first major local government guidebook on peak oil and global warming. Daniel has worked on urban planning issues for over twelve years in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

He has delivered presentations and workshops on energy uncertainty to elected officials, city planners and other audiences across the United States, as well as in Canada, Ireland and the UK. Daniel has worked on urban planning issues for over twelve years in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

He has a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from Rutgers University in New Jersey and a Master of Urban Studies from Portland State University in Oregon. Daniel is the Program Director of Post Carbon Institute.


Gord Lambert Vice President, Sustainable Development, Suncor Energy Inc.

In his role, Gord directs Suncor’s environment, health and safety policies and works with senior management and external stakeholders to align and improve the company’s long-term financial, social and environmental performance.

Prior to assuming this role in July 1997, Gord spent two years as Director, Sustainable Development for TransAlta Corporation and 15 years with Imperial Oil Limited. He is involved with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in support of its work on climate change and sustainable development within the business community.  He is currently on the Board of the BIOCAP Canada Foundation and the Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF).  Gord is a current member and past director/treasurer of the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.  He graduated in 1980 from the University of Guelph with an Honors Bachelor of Sciences degree majoring in Biological Science with a minor in economics.


Barry Worbets
Vice President, Health, Safety and Environment, Integrity and Social Responsibility, Statoil-Hydro Canada Ltd.

Born and raised in rural Alberta, Barry graduated form the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. and the University of Calgary with a Masters of Environmental Design.  Prior to leading the Canada West Foundation's work on Natural Capital for 4 years, he spent three decades in the oil and gas sector working in the area where environmental and business interests intersect. 

In 2001, the Emerald Foundation for Environmental Excellence recognized Barry for his corporate leadership.  He has taken on a assignment with StatoilHydro an integrated oil and gas company with operations in 40 countries.  StatoilHydro has an international award winning environmental record and is a world leader in carbon capture and sequestration.


Todd Hirsch Senior Economist, ATB Financial

Since completing his education in 2003, Todd has held a series of economist positions at a variety of for-profit and public sector organizations, including the Canada West Foundation, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Bank of Canada.

Todd joined ATB Financial in May 2007 as Senior Economist where he provides economic information and intelligence to the various lines of business at ATB. He also tracks current developments in Alberta’s and North America's economy and delivers presentations to both internal and external audiences.

Todd appears regularly as an economic commentator on CBC radio, various TV programs, and in the press. He also teaches two economics courses at the University of Calgary, acts as a mentor for the Economics Society of Calgary’s student mentorship program, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Calgary Arts Academy.

Todd Hirsch received his BA Honors in Economics from the University of Alberta, and an MA in Economics from the University of Calgary.


Leonard Waverman Dean, Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary

Dr. Leonard Waverman, a world-renowned expert in the international telecommunications and resource management sectors is the Dean of the Haskayne School of Business. He has extensive experience in academia and the private sector and comes to the Haskayne School of Business from the London Business School where he was Chair of Economics for four years.

Before moving to the London Business School, Leonard was professor of economics at the University of Toronto. His research and industry work has focused in the fields of information and communications technology and natural resources management. He is no stranger to the business milieu in Calgary: his work on the energy sector is equally highly respected in academic and corporate circles, and his advice has been keenly sought by oil and gas companies working in Alberta.

James Schwinn

James Schwinn is the founder of Aixecar Incorporated, a privately owned company, headquartered in Calgary, that offers advisory, platform development and transaction management services to municipalities, civic planners and socially responsible developers and financial institutions involved in property and community development projects in Canada and the U.S.

In addition to de novo projects, Aixecar has a strong interest in the restructuring and workout of projects that have relied to date upon traditional development models but that can benefit from the introduction of sustainability-based approaches and are in need of recapitalization. James is a co-founder, and through Aixecar, contributing partner to the development of ASH (“Affordable Sustainable Homes”), a stylish, small-space urban housing solution made timely by the realities of the economic downturn and the transformational impact of sustainability thought, culture and practice and its influence on “footprint thinking” at the community and individual levels.

James has over twenty years experience in international structured finance and capital markets with particular expertise in the areas of shelter finance, credit and capital structuring and sustainable economics. In 2004, James co-founded and served as the first chief executive officer of Surrenda-link Mortgage Holdings Limited, an innovative European structured finance company. His previous professional experience includes roles as Director and head of the ING/Barings global conduit finance business where he managed a commercial paper-based financing business that funded over US$8 billion of structured assets and Vice President at Citibank where he managed securitization transactions in the U.S. and U.K. and advised on securitization programs in Australia, Germany, Spain, the Philippines and India. In 2008, James participated on the advisory task force that was organized by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce for its report, Municipal Land Development Policies and Regulations and the Impact on Calgary Affordable Housing.


Gian Carlo Carra Senior Urban Designer, T-Six Urbanists Inc.

Gian Carlo is a Senior Urban Designer for T-Six who balances professional practice with community service and academic research. Gian Carlo brings a balance of all of these considerations to the table and serves to bridge the gap between ideals, practicality, and education of the public. Gian Carlo’s roles include urban design, project management, charrette facilitation, education and public speaking. He holds a Masters in Urban Design from the University of Calgary, and is currently working on a PhD in Urban Geography.


Marlo Raynolds Executive Director, the Pembina Institute

Dr. Marlo Raynolds is the Executive Director at the Pembina Institute. He has worked with the Institute since 1995 in the development and practical application of triple-bottom-line decision-making tools, energy systems, and strategies for sustainability.

Marlo has worked with a wide range of clients including many of the large Canadian energy companies. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (University of Alberta), a B.Sc. in Systems Design Engineering (University of Waterloo), and a Masters in Management and Leadership for the Voluntary Sector (McGill University). He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sustainable Development at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary.


Owen A. Tobert City Manager, City of Calgary

Owen A. Tobert serves as the City Manager of The City of Calgary, a municipal government that has over 12,000 employees in 28 different businesses. The City of Calgary is a leader in environmental management, the provision of water and wastewater services, transportation infrastructure and parks and pathways for one of Canada's largest and fastest growing cities.

Owen joined The City in 1982, and has held increasingly senior positions with Waterworks, Waste & Recycling Services and Urban Development. In 2000, he was selected as General Manager of Utilities & Environmental Protection and appointed to the Executive Team. In June 2004, the Mayor and City Council appointed Owen Tobert to the position of City Manager.

Owen holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Calgary. He is an active community volunteer, serving the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, the Calgary Folk Music Festival and the Calgary Roots and Blues Festival.

John Hubbell

General Manager of Transportation, City of Calgary

John is the General Manager of Transportation for The City of Calgary and has responsibility for all aspects of planning, construction and operation of transportation in Calgary, Canada. The responsibilities range from the planning for all modes of travel – pedestrian, cycle, goods, public transit and auto; operation of Calgary Transit and the road network; and the construction of transportation infrastructure.
During a 39 year career with The City of Calgary he managed planning and operational functions with Calgary Transit from the mid 1970s to 2000 when he was appointed Director of Calgary Transit. He was appointed General Manager of Transportation for The City of Calgary in 2006.

John has taught transit planning and operations courses, presented technical papers at local, national and international conferences and served on the boards of community not-for-profit and industry associations.

Mary Axworthy

Director, Land Use Planning and Policy, City of Calgary

Mary Axworthy has spent the majority of her career with The City, including three years in her current role as Director and four years as Manager of Development and Business Licence in Development and Building Approvals. Mary has also held various other positions at The City including Executive Assistant to the Director of Planning and Building, Section Head, Downtown Policy and Development, Corporate Consultant and Executive Assistant to the Chief Commissioner. She holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Design (Urbanism) from the University of Calgary and a BA in Urban Studies from the University of Winnipeg.


Eva Friesen President and CEO, The Calgary Foundation

Ms. Friesen has served as the President and CEO of The Calgary Foundation since spring, 2005. Widely respected in the Calgary community, she has an extensive background of providing effective leadership. In her previous position as CEO of the Calgary Health Trust she took on the challenge of building the agency into the health charity of choice for Calgarians and increased revenue from $12 million to $20 million over 4 years. Eva championed change and demonstrated effective leadership in three major YWCA’s in Canada over her 22 year career with the YWCA, which started in Winnipeg, then took her to Yellowknife where she was the CEO for 5 years, then to Calgary where she was the CEO of the Calgary YWCA for 12 years.

Ms. Friesen has served on a variety of Boards including the Calgary Police Commission and currently, the Enviros Wilderness School Association. She has facilitated a variety of Management/Board Development and Leadership workshops including the Banff Centre for Management. She has a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of Manitoba and an MBA from the University of Calgary.


Rob Abbott Director of Sustainability, Stratos and Conference Moderator

Rob Abbott is one of Canada’s leading sustainability strategists.  Over the past twenty years he has helped businesses all over the world discover wealth-creating opportunities through a deeper integration of sustainability with organizational and competitive strategy.  He is not only a highly sought after speaker on this topic, but also a passionate mentor and coach for students and social entrepreneurs wishing to explore the business value of sustainability.  Rob’s clients include leading TSX, NYSE, and Fortune/S&P 500 firms; new venture enterprises; government agencies; and NGOs.  A core focus of his current work is helping businesses worldwide embrace the audacious thinking and radical innovation necessary to transition to a less carbon intensive economy.

A Certified Management Consultant, Rob frames corporate responsibility and sustainability in a strategic business context that guides organizations to the creation and implementation of programs that deliver both shareholder and stakeholder value, and create or burnish a brand reputation.  He is particularly interested in helping organizations push past organizational effectiveness and embrace true organizational transformation through sustainability.  Rob completed undergraduate work in geography at the University of Victoria, and Masters Degrees in geography and environmental studies at the University of Toronto, before undertaking Doctoral studies in resource and environmental management at Simon Fraser University.  He is the author of Uncommon Cents: Thoreau and the Nature of Business (2008), and the forthcoming (2009) Conscious Endeavors: Essays on Business, Society and the Journey to Sustainability.  He is also the strategy columnist for Green Business Magazine, and a frequent commentator on sustainability and business strategy in regional and national magazines and newspapers in Canada.  In 2008, Rob was awarded a Mesa Refuge writing fellowship to support his work. 


Greg Allen
Sustainable Strategist - HOK

Greg Allen, PEng, LEED® AP, works with project teams by researching deep green systems, proposing sustainable strategies in the early design stages of projects, and developing energy policy for clients. Recent projects include Humber River Regional Hospital redevelopment project in Toronto, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia and the York Region District School Board’s Green Elementary School Prototype.

Greg has worked on advancing sustainability for over 30 years, not only as a designer and builder, but also as community planner, researcher, manufacturer, policy advisor, community activist and environmental consultant. He has been a Board member of numerous sustainability-related organizations, including the Canada Green Building Council Greater Toronto Chapter, Energy Action Council of Toronto, Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative, Toronto Sustainability Roundtable Waterfront Committee, and the Sustainable Building Association of Canada.

A Member of Engineers Canada, Greg received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Engineering Science (Aerospace) from the University of Toronto. He has won numerous awards, including the Life Time Achievement Award for Sustainable Buildings, presented at the 2005 Toronto Regional Green Building Festival, and the 2008 Green Toronto Award for Leadership.

Director, Urban Solutions, Canadian Urban Institute

Brent is the Director of Urban Solutions at the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI). He is a professional planner who has a strong focus on the Institute's urban energy programs and is involved with the research and communication initiatives related to land use, municipal practice, integrated planning, and advice to public agencies on sustainable urbanization practices. Brent leads the energy and land use mapping, as well as value planning institute teams and regularly advises on planning matters related to urban energy systems and value capture for government and private sector clients.

Prior to joining CUI, Brent was the Strategic Coordinator responsible for the establishment of the University of Toronto's Sustainability Office (USO) and was an independent research consultant specializing in community energy innovation. Brent holds a Masters of Science in Planning from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)in Environmental and Urban Studies from the University of Toronto.


Bob Hawkesworth Deputy Mayor, City of Calgary

Bob Hawkesworth was re-elected for a sixth time to represent Ward 4 in October 2007. Bob's first experience on Calgary City Council, however, began in 1980 as Alderman for Ward 3 and continued until 1986 when he was chosen by his constituents to represent them in the Provincial Legislature as MLA for Calgary Mountainview.

In continuing his commitment to Ward 4, Bob presently sits on the following civic boards and committees:

• Standing Policy Committee on Utilities & Environment
• Disaster Services Committee, Chair
• Enmax Corporation, Board Director

He co-chairs the Canadian Municipal Housing Advocacy Network - Federation of Canadian Municipalities and his leadership on environmental sustainability was acknowledged by his Provincial appointment as a Founding Director of Climate Change Central.

Bob’s accomplishments over the years have been recognized with a number of awards. In 1999 he received the AUMA Award of Excellence for outstanding service to municipal government in Alberta. He was a recipient of the 2000 Calgary United Way “Spirits of Gold Award” for co-chairing the Calgary Homeless Initiative. In 2005, Alberta Venture Magazine named Bob one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People.

Dave Day
Heather Douglas
President and CEO, Calgary Chamber of Commerce  

Heather Douglas was appointed to the position of President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce as of October 1, 2005. Prior to joining the Chamber, Heather was the Founder and President of Strategic Public Affairs (SPA), a worldwide combination of external and internal affairs and communications professionals. She has more than 20 years experience in journalism and public affairs, has directed media, government, and shareholder relations, crisis communications, and image and reputation management for three major Canadian companies (one a Fortune 500 affiliate).

Heather is the former Manager, Public and Government Affairs for Mobil Oil Canada where she successfully directed several of Canada's largest public consultation programs - including the Hibernia offshore oil and the Sable natural gas projects. Mobil sent her to run Mobil's Public and Government Affairs Department in the United Kingdom and Norway, assigned her to special projects in the Far East, and brought her to Washington D.C. to work with several Asian embassies. She has also served as Vice President, Public Affairs and Government Relations with Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL), her duties included building relationships with foreign governments on behalf of the Crown Corporation. She also headed their worldwide media relations, stakeholder relations, crisis communications, and public consultation programs. She was an officer of the Corporation and a member of its Executive Council.

Heather has co-authored two books and has spoken at numerous seminars and conferences. Her topics range from energy and communications to negotiation strategies. She is currently working toward her doctorate in political science.

Dave Day

Director, Environmental & Safety Management, City of Calgary 

Dave brings over 30 years experience in the parks and conservation field to his position as Director of the City of Calgary’s Environmental Management business unit.  Born in England and raised in Montréal, Dave is a practicing geographer by education and inclination (B.A., 1969, Concordia; M.Sc., 1971, University of Calgary). 

His professional career includes 20 years public service with Parks Canada, specializing first in natural resource inventory and management, and subsequently as Superintendent of Jasper National Park, Rideau Canal, and Banff National Park.  From 1992 until 2003, Dave was a Principal in the firm IRIS Environmental Systems Inc., specializing in environmental assessment and management for the tourism industry in protected and environmentally sensitive areas.  He has also worked internationally for the Nature Conservancy, World Bank and industry.

In June 2003, Dave returned to public service, attracted by the challenge of applying his experience to supporting Calgary’s municipal and community leaders to achieve a high standard of environmental quality and community sustainability for the present and future generations.

Jennifer Hewson
 Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Work,
University of Calgary

Dr. Jennifer Hewson is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. She is the former Director of the Centre for Social Work Research and Professional Development. Jennifer is currently focusing on teaching research to Master’s students in the leadership concentration and engaging in community based research with a particular interest in community engagement, social inclusion and participation, and age friendly communities.

She has been involved in a number of Urban Alliance collaborative research projects with the Faculty of Social Work and the City of Calgary such as exploring the social bottom line for infrastructure and determining thresholds for locating social services.

Wolf Keller

Dean, School of Social Work, University of Calgary and Co-Chair, Urban Alliance 

Wolf Keller, P. Eng., received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 1972.  He has over twenty years experience in developing and operating water and wastewater facilities and systems.  In his current role as Director of Water Resources for The City of Calgary he is responsible for providing the water related infrastructure needed in a growing city, to ensure there are adequate supplies of water and to protect the water environment for future generations.

Wolf is actively involved with a number of national and international water related associations and is a supporter of initiatives which promote sustainable cities and a strong water sector.
