Presentation of the Plan It Calgary Stakeholder Advisory Committee

The Plan It Calgary initiative is a new integrated land use and mobility plan guiding growth and development in the city over the next 10 to 15 years, and will significantly impact the way we live, work, build our communities, and do business.

Join the Plan It Calgary Stakeholder Advisory Committee of experts, who are involved in the plan’s creation, to discuss the key issues and challenges as they relate to business, community, environmental and industry sector interests.

Stakeholder representatives include the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Calgary Communities, Sustainable Calgary, Bow River Basin Council, Canadian Homebuilders and Developers Associations and a transportation systems expert.

Changing Organizational Culture
with Thought Leader Sarah Severn, Global Director Futures, Nike Inc.

The University of Calgary’s Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy and the Office of Sustainability present Sarah Severn, a change leader at Nike Inc.  This workshop on organizational change frames one of the key questions of the conference: “How do we facilitate the necessary systemic change to support the innovation, speed and appropriate scale to mitigate climate change, attain energy security and realize an equitable and sustainable world for future generations?”  Such matters are right at the heart of the innovation challenge Calgary faces as the world looks beyond oil for energy solutions.  Can Calgary diversify and expand its energy skills and expertise?  What stakeholders, what conditions, and most important what culture and values are needed to make this transition? Sarah’s presentation will be followed by a moderated panel discussion.  Panelists include:

- David Layzell, Executive Director ISEEE (Moderator)

- Joanne Perdue, Director of Sustainability, U of C

- Sarah Severn, Director of Horizons, Corporate Responsibility, Nike Inc.

- David Day, Director of Environmental Management, City of Calgary

- Frank Coppinger, Superintendent Facilities and Environmental Services, CBE

Integrated Resource Management (IRM):
From Waste Stream to Revenue (and Energy) Stream

An intensive, detailed discussion of IRM strategies and economics.  This ‘shirtsleeves’ workshop will have direct appeal and relevance to elected leaders, municipal administrators, practitioners in the energy and resource fields, municipal infrastructure directors, private sector infrastructure consultants, and engaged citizens.

IRM utilizes existing technology for treating municipal, agricultural and industrial waste streams, but employs an integrated systems design that systematically maximizes net revenues from resource recovery in terms of energy, water and nutrients

The principals of Fidelis Resources Inc., based in Victoria British Columbia, in association with engineer Bruce Jank,
Project Manager for Legacy Community Inc., which is applying the IRM model in the  Elbow Valley Country Estates located in the Municipal District of Rocky View will lead a workshop featuring ‘real world’ systems models and detailed economic modeling to highlight the opportunities, risks and institutional impediments associated with implementing integrated resource management.

Where on Earth do you get the Energy?
Sustainable Design - The Next Generation

This workshop features the extraordinary output of University of Calgary graduate (Faculty of  Environmental Design) and undergraduate (Urban Studies Program) students of urban studies, urban design, planning and architecture, who will present designs for more energy efficient low-carbon, ecological footprint-lowering, livable (not to mention debt busting) urban and community designs. The student work covers Transforming the Suburbs, A Sustainable Calgary 2050, An Alternative Proposal for Balzac and The 100 Anniversary Return of the Streetcar to Calgary. The workshop will  feature poster presentations of the designs, short presentations of each design proposal and lots of time for discussion and debate.  Please join us for this on-the-ground program that will surely engage both the professional and the citizen community-builder.

The Energy System

For most of us, energy is the gas tank and the light switch, a set of random headlines, and a handful of buzz phrases like “solar” and “the grid.”  This workshop will start to transform you into an “energy citizen” who really understands the matters of sourcing, capacity, consumption and impacts.  This interactive workshop will explore oilsands issues, Alberta’s electrical grid, alternative energy opportunities and how Calgarians use energy. The workshop will bring together the diverse work of the Pembina Institute – a national sustainable energy think tank – and give you an opportunity to engage in a conversation with Pembina leaders and other experts in the energy field.

What’s in Calgary’s Tank?  Preparing Calgary for the Energy Future

This is the culminating event of the conference, and it will give the entire conference community the opportunity to pose questions and make comments in a facilitated session including the exceptional resources of the SuperPanel who have presented their views on Friday morning, bolstered by some additional voices.

We'll be joined by:

Heather Douglas, President and CEO, Calgary Chamber of Commerce
Daniel Lerch,
Program Director, Post Carbon Institute;
and James Schwinn, CEO, Aixecar Incorporated

Several key questions frame this workshop:

  • What might a post-oil or transitional energy future look like?
  • Is Calgary poised to respond?
  • What human and financial resources are required to make Calgary competitive with other centres of energy innovation?
  • How do we as a city measure risk and opportunity in this context?
  • What stakeholders need to be engaged?
  • What’s the right leadership model and organizational structure to plan and then propel the Calgary strategy?
The outcomes of this conference—and specifically this workshop—go straight to the City of Calgary’s leadership and other leaders in business, research and innovation, learning centres, to senior government, and to media.
